Bengaluru : Saturday nights are supposed to be the party nights in the city but this time, it was a Wednesday, 8th July 2015, that saw a late night party in the city. It was not the usual one where you would see alcohol and dance. This party was different. It happened at Electronic City, the locality where the Global IT Giant WIPRO is present. In the evening today, news came in faster than Brett Lee’s bowling that the IT czar Azim Premji has given away almost half of his shareholding in WIPRO, towards philanthropy. WIPRO’s billionaire founder had given away an additional 18 per cent of his stake in the IT company for charity, thus earmarking a 39 per cent of stake (worth Rs 53,284 crore) for a charitable trust.
Reading this news, the employees of WIPRO were taken aback. The discussions on WhatsApp groups and office LAN ensured that the otherwise calm techies protested against this decision of their founder. The lead of this entire movement was Mr. Mohan Shukla, an ex-AAP member. With his vast experience in a variety of protests, dharnas and agitations, his captaincy seemed to be the most reliable. Moreover, he had been working in WIPRO for over 8 years now and was naturally the most frustrated individual. Our Faking News reporter got in touch with him, and because of his Media Wannabe attitude, it was not really tough for us to get his time.
“So sir, why are you protesting?” asked our cute 22 years reporter in her sweet voice and over done makeup.
Shukla jee started with, “First of all don’t call me sir, I am Mohan” which confirmed to us that he was an engineer. We were quite sure from this very instant that he was a victim of the skewed gender ratios of an engineering college. Our reporter then wore her jacket and covered her face because safety comes first.
“I have been with the company for close to a decade now. The maximum increment I have gotten was in my third year of job, and that too was a mere 9 percent. For the first few years, I used to go to the HR asking them for an explanation. But now I have left it because everytime they come up with a new excuse to prove that the company was not doing well. Only yesterday did my friend Babloo tell me that the HR had announced of the company suffering losses because of the Greek crisis. But what our Founder did today is surprising, shocking and depressing!” he continued.
The other Engineers, listening to this sentimental story found it wise to join Shukla jee and some of them even started the slogans “Coding voding nahi hoga, hamara paisa dena hoga!” Some of them lost their cool and opened up their hearts. “Why is he donating somewhere else? We are the most poor of the educated lot and see no future scope. Why are we not even considered? Just because Engineers are available in every quantity and quality today?”
We later talked to few more people in the WIPRO campus and the responses were almost the same. It had been quite some time that there was a respectable hike in the salary of the employees. Some of them even alleged that they had to work 12 hours daily because their boss was busy flirting with the new recruits. We talked to few girls to know their reason for protests but they did not really have a solid reason. We believe that they had come off from work to make a list of the most agitating guys and later complaint about them in the Annual Appraisals.
In all this chaos, we spotted the HR department folks who were trying to rush back home. One of them said “Even we do not know where all this money has come and gone. But the employees should understand that the job is not for money and bank balance, but to create value and improve skills.” Listening to this, the techies started howling and shouting, until one of the HR reminded them that more than four thousand resumes are lying with them and getting a job replacement was not a tough task. This was enough to push half the crowd back to their desks and the remaining half, mostly Shukla jee’s friends and the spying girls, proceeded to the canteen and ordered the cutting chai and bread pakoda.
