Sometime in June 2015, I saw this novel in a leading bookstore. Reading the brief of it, I purchased it instantaneously. It read:

“Launching a newbie into the Indian matrimonial scene is like introducing a new iPhone in an already saturated market – has to be sleek, overflowing with catchy features, and better than the already available versions. So when twenty-five-year-old Nitya Trivedi is forced into it by her ever so enthusiastic mother and pestering relatives, she hardly knows what she has bargained for. In her journey to find her soul-mate (??!!), she becomes Dollarkumar’s Poundkumari, ends up fasting on party days to make peace with her horrorscope, attends hilarious ‘arranged’ meetings through various matchmaking portals and people – all under the nose of her extremely evil, but deliciously debonair boss Rudra Desai. With besties tying the knot and cousins ‘stealing’ prospective grooms…wonder how Nitya’s mother will find the perfect match for her only daughter. But as always, love will find a way in the midst of The Shaadi Brouhaha…”

Though I have not entered into the ‘marriage market’ yet, I have heard similar sagas from my friends and cousins. Over the next few days, I read a part of this interesting novel, which was then borrowed (read as snatched) by a cousin of mine. Apparently, it then made several rounds in her friends’ circle, and came back to me only in January 2016. It is saddening that in the name of ‘sharing and caring’, we Indian’s do not promote art and talent. The novel which should have been bought by all of us separately has been excessively shared and I feel bad to have been a part of this vicious circle against my wish.

So well, this debut novel of Anjlee Shah is incredible and here’s my review in a rapid fire mode:

  • Book cover – Attractive
  • Blurb – Exciting
  • Story – Well shaped
  • Character sketch – Neat
  • Writing style – Smooth

What the book lacked, I believe, was intense marketing. It is something which every married individual will relate to, and if unmarried, will definitely enjoy and get prepared for. With a good marketing, this would have sold like a hot cake and become a buzz in the country, but well, it isn’t doing badly either. All those who have read it have enjoyed it (I say this from the reviews of my cousin and her friends and their friends – all those who borrowed it). Sorry Anjlee, I’ll ensure this gang buys your next novel. Keep writing!
